Tegan and Sara – Heartthrob

(Vapor/Warner Music Canada) Get used to it. The Quin twins have a bonafide commercial hit single in Closer, one that will transport their music to a much wider audience. Their first six studio releases may have been slotted into the indie file but there’s nothing alternative about Heartthrob, 10 tracks of hook laden, lyrics and catchy, danceable, techno arrangements (courtesy of producers Greg Kurstin and Justin Meldal-Johnsen). Yes we all know that the Calgary-born twins are gay and their sexual preference is definitely a focal point of this album. Yet the material is current, the arrangements are techno pop without being overbearing and there’s an overall freshness about this release which suggests a renewed vibrancy with the pair. And Heartthrob isn’t just a one-hit wonder! “Closer” is a definite chart-topper but so too is “How Come You Don’t Want Me”, “Now I’m All Messed Up” and “I Am Not Your Hero” Tegan and Sara have already appeared on a recent episode of the TV show 90210 and the potential of Heartthrob suggests a widely expanding market for the girls in 2013.
